ENDEAVOUR - HOIST THE BLUE PETER

Blue Peter – There is some controversy over the origin of the term, but basically it is a blue flag with a white field within it. Flown on the foremast head, it is a signal to the crew on shore co come on board; also as a warning to merchants that the ship is about to set sail.

Captain Cook and his crew may well have sailed the Endeavour in Kachemak Bay, just out of what is now Homer, Alaska. My father-in-law and I were charter fishing when I happened to capture this scene of the mountains, fog, and light rays. We also caught a few fish, but I think I fed more than I caught. Regardless, the scenery made the day. I’d wanted to paint a sailing ship, and this scene, and when the idea of painting the Endeavour came to mind, placing it in this scene seemed to be a natural fit. Going through my natural progression of rational/irrational steps of developing and creating a painting, I found myself trying to figure out how to create the right balance of contrast with which to emphasize specific elements of the painting. Fortunately, before I could do any damage I realized I’d been overlooking a major element of the scene – atmosphere. All of a sudden, at that point, I could see air.
