Got to know a fellow from Australia, Richard Knight – wherever you are – and we took a couple of backpacking trips along two sections of the Iditarod trail on the Kenai peninsula. This scene is of Raven Gulch, on the Crow Pass trail at a point where a glacial stream (the glacier is just a few miles upstream) drops off of a plateau into this chasm. The wonder of nature’s shapes, the scale, and the sense of her power using water and time to create all of this made me a bit nervous, made my balls tingle. The craggy rock would grind up anything, the water is fast and really cold, and looking downstream was even worse (a chilling thought). We forded a fifty yard stretch of the river a few miles later and lost feeling in our legs half way across, had to rub them in the sun for a while after.
